When is business automation a bad idea?

Short answer: Business automation is a bad idea when the process is unclear, rarely repeated, highly judgement-dependent, based on unreliable information or too risky to run without close human control. In those cases, simplifying the process or clarifying responsibility usually comes first.

01

The process changes every time

If nobody can explain the normal route and the meaningful exceptions, the first task is process design. Automation needs enough stability to know what it is carrying.

02

The task is infrequent

A complicated build for work that happens twice a year may never repay the implementation and maintenance effort. Use a checklist or template when that is sufficient.

03

Errors have serious consequences

Financial, legal, health, safeguarding and sensitive customer decisions need appropriate professional and human oversight. Automation can organise information without becoming the decision-maker.

04

The real problem is the offer

A faster follow-up system cannot rescue weak demand, unsuitable pricing or an unclear service. Diagnose whether the constraint is operational before treating it as an automation problem.
